Title: Looking for a card reader to use with mini ipad
Post by: GaysieMay on October 28, 2013, 04:28:16 PM
Just wondered if anyone has any advice on this?  Horror stories or successes before I start the task of working out which one might suit me best.  I'm wanting one to take to fairs.  Thanks. X

I have a Sum-it gadget thingy, quite a few traders have one, I have yet to use mine though still on the card machine but hubby is taking the card machine over at the garage, too expensive for me to have it for the occasional fair, these days most people prefer cash not cards for spending.

Well, I would have told you about the Izettle one....but having picked it up last night from the pub where DHL delivered it to because I wasn't in, I put it "safely" in my pocket, had a pint, then went to the local curry house, and then home. This morning said pocket is empty, so I appear to have lost it before even playing with it!!!!! Unless I find it put away in a strange "safe" place!!!! Will turn the house upside down later, but I suspect it may have fallen out of my pocket on my way home last night  :'(

I have worldpay zinc which is cheaper than izettle and paypal but I haven't used it much  :)

Sorry if this is a bit of a daft question but I'll ask it anyway!  These gizmos don't print receipts (unlike my Cardsave terminal) how do you give the customer a receipt for their card payment?  If you had to text it to them, isn't that long winded when you are busy?  Like me, a lot of my customers wouldn't have smart phones.

You can email them receipts too Sue  - yes it is long winded, but its something I'm hoping not to have to do too often.  I haven't had time to play with mine yet, but am hoping to get to grips with it later. x

Now I'm being encouraged to enter the 21 century as well!  Have you looked at Worldpay Zinc, works with Apple but struggling to find an android table it will work with.  Paypal - saw that working a couple of weekends ago, a friend swears by it.  She has on an ipad and seems to have picked up the type of items she sells on Ebay so you can just touch a list to add to invoice.  But it only work with Apple products.  I think Paypal also lets you text the receipt, quicker than Zinc's email the receipt.

I've been watching this thread with interest as I've been thinking about getting one probably next year. My worry is using it via my phone and how it will affect my usage limits plus add signal problems for instance some areas here you still can't get a signal and 3G well it's just G. But I must say the paypal here and the worldpay zinc look good.

I've gone the iZettle route and I'm reasonably pleased with it.  When it's all playing nicely it's brilliant.  I bought the card reader and the receipt printer and cash box (I have a shop now so wasn't looking for a mobile solution, but there is a receipt printer that doesn't need to be plugged in as well).

My only problem is it's a bit annoying having to keep checking they're all still connected to one another (Bluetooth between the iPad, the card reader and the receipt printer) - if you don't use it for a while it drops the connection.  I guess if you're really busy that won't be an issue though!

PS there is a smaller card reader that was free when I signed up (not sure if it still is) but that's not a chip & pin reader, and doesn't deal with Visa very well, so I decided to bite the bullet and pay for the better card reader.  At least it's a one off cost rather than having to pay for the reader every month.

Just thought I'd do an update. I went for the zinc worldpay and have so far used it with no problems.  The only thing I am worried about is whether my bank account might get a bit sniffy as it's no a business account, but if needs be I can always open a free online one. Was at a good fair at the weekend and took quite a lot of money on it - wouldn't have wanted to miss those sales.  Yet to check money gas made it into account, so popping off to load up PC and check. X

Thanks for the update.  I no longer have a business account either and I have a Cardsave mobile terminal paying into it; if Streamline are happy then I am happy.  Apparently the law changed a year or so ago so that sole traders did not have to have a business bank account to have a merchant account.  Took me several bank changes and many months to work that one out, it wasn't made obvious by Cardsave until I asked them what one of the forms they sent me was for.  As soon as I opened free bank accounts the banks started charging :( and as soon as I moved on to another Santander dropped the charges!  I think First Direct are just grateful I pay money in at the moment.

I knew I didn't need a business account as a sole trader, but I'm just not sure how the bank will react, then again I'm not expecting to use it that much.  I had a card saying I took card payments (came in the box with the card reader) so I'm thinking I might not put it out next time and just give people the nudge if they are hovering over my more expensive bits and bobs? One transaction was for 70, but the rest were all 20 (I have incredibly simple lazy pricing system!  ;D

I have the izettle one. It's a bit of a faff tbh. It's fine if it's the right type of card, think it's fine if it's MasterCard but if it's visa it's a nuisance. Might be the other way around. Anyways I haven't had any issues with my bank, no charges etc.

Its definitely worth the outlay, I love my zinc. Its the difference between a sale or not quite often - you tell them that you take cards and their eyes light up and they start looking around to see what else they want to buy.

I have discovered though, it only checks for update when you connect it and actually start running a payment through. I had checked it before I left last time but didn't start doing a payment. It was rather embarrassing having to wait for it to update not to mention the data usage...

I am coming out of my business account soon, although another tip, don't tell a bank the account will be used for business purposes, they won't give you a personal account if you do, well not HSBC anyway.

I've not been able to use my worldpay zinc one yet. I've taken it to three fairs and not been able to get on the app at all. It's very frustrating.

The lack of signal would be something I would really be worried about.

Is that due to your internet connection?  Mine's permanently there on my tablet, it talks to the keypad using bluetooth but the only time I had a problem was when I couldn't get an O2 signal where I should have been able to (but then discovered I could get wifi in the building anyway :) )

If you think it is a WPZ problem rather than a wifi or 3G issue, have you contacted them?  I found their customer service really helpful when I was having 'user error' problems (should have read instructions twice!).

I think it's internet signal that's the issue but I can get on other apps (even if it's a bit slower). The worldpay zinc one doesn't connect though unless it's the best internet signal possible or on wifi. It's frustrating when I can get on to other apps but not that one.

Is it compatible with your phone/tablet?  It isn't with everything (although manages to connect to my pretty basic Lenovo tablet).  I'd contact them, you paid for a service you cannot use.

Yep, I've used it on wifi then it works fine. Just can't guarantee that everywhere I do a show has wifi. I'll call them once we have a landline set up.

Does your WPZ not pick up a 3G or H signal on your phone?  I did a fair recently in the middle of a park and the 3g was weak, occasionally lapsing into Edge, but the WPZ managed to work although it was really slow.....really, really slow :/

It doesn't seem to work unless there's H signal or wifi. If it's any sort of G then the app doesn't load.

Crikey, that's not good and doesn't seem right.  Hope that WPZ can help when you contact them.

My iZettle card reader takes all cards - Visa no problem at all.  Do you have the freebie version?  That may have a Visa problem, the one you buy for 50 or so definitely doesn't.

I know a few people with iZettle who say on any given day it won't take one kind of card or another, with Mastercard being it's favourite to not take.  It's the reason I went with WPZ.

Isn't G the same as 2G, only works for texts and phone calls, not internet?  I had this conversation with O2 when I was in the back end of Cumbria with G and couldn't get online, they said you need 3G or H (or better) to get internet, and for WPZ to work it needs internet or wifi.

I didn't think that was how it worked. I can still get on the Internet when I just have G, it's just a bit slower. pages still load though.

I lied, I can get emails if I have G, but not an internet page (if I use my tablet in my little studio I only get G - just went and checked what I can get).  Apparently G is the lowest and slowest form of internet?

Don't have a problem with any cards, BUT I do have wifi so that may make the difference.  I don't take it to fairs (though in theory you can, and they also do a portable receipt printer but I've not tried it).
