So if I want to make non-rusting outdoors windchimes next...
« on: December 27, 2016, 06:42:12 PM »
...I assume I need wire, chain and jump rings made of something like aluminium or stainless steel, right? Anyone care to point me in the direction of a good supplier and/or share any tips for working with either sort of metal? For the indoors chimes I've been using 18ga wire and mostly 4 and 8mm jump rings, they need to be nice quality ones that close securely. And 2-3mm chain with closed links.
Thanks folks  :)

The only thing that jumps immediately to mind are plumbing supplies, you know the ball chains and triangle jump rings for bath plugs etc. They are designed to be in and around water all the time. Not sure what the metal is though mind you..

Update... after a false start when the chain I thought was stainless wasn't (it was mild steel that had been mislabelled by the supplier) I have now got supplies of stainless components and have had a prototype chime out in the garden over the winter. It's survived the storms and rain absolutely fine... so there will be proper outdoorsy chimes coming soon, stay tuned  ;D
