I tend to rate photos on interest and subject rather than being pedantic over light and dark areas!  So there.  :D

any image has to appeal to you in a way that appeals to you - while 'photographers' have technical criteria as to how they view and judge images - 'people' who look at images should always and only judge them or what they like. I have seen some great images i enjoy that are technically 'poor' so what ! I have seen some technically brilliant images that are 'appreciated' by me for their skill but the actual resulting image leaves me cold. I kinda flip flop between the tech and the image at the moment in my photography, a lot is macro 'record' shots but i do try to do 'interesting' shots.

one area i am driving my photography is to create a series of 'Botanical' images - a style to mimic the botanical drawings but to use digital photographs a bit like this

Thanks Jolene,
Jille, yep Geranium robertianum - Herb Robert

Ian, i used a technique where you spot meter on the flower and ensure the background is total white and exposed to 255 so its fully blown out then minor work on PP to adjust the contrast, if required. In effect the idea is to 'mimic' a botanical drawing on paper. this is the first stage  :)
