Slugs and Snails
« on: May 22, 2013, 12:38:01 PM »
I thought it would be good to start a thread on this so we can pool our experience and tips. I've had some brilliant advice from our Sam's Dad and here is a little blog post on my first lottie experiences with those munching slimers.

My mum swears by coffee grounds, they seem to be a good deterrent. Failing that slug and snail frisbee or tennis  :P  ;D

I'd lend you a bird from my garden but most seem to be vegetarian, and the one I could get near had left me a hall full of feathers and was playing dead!  Now to find the 4-legged culprits >:(

I once tried slug traps that you sink into the earth and then fill with beer to entice them in - it did work but cleaning them out made me want to throw up as I have quite a slug phobia! Failing that, try going out at dusk with salt to sprinkle on them... Not very kind but they are just so disgusting...  >:(

Lol - I told Jo to bury quarter full beer cans on the plot and get them drunk  :P  My nan used to do that as you can just throw the can.  Bleugh.

The beer does work, but its a yucky mess, best deterrent is a couple of chooks  they love to munch on the slimmy suckers, failing that I can lend you our Char, give her a bottle of salt and let her loose, I have no idea where she got this love of killing slugs from, she has always done it and I hate it, mean and nasty little girl, so much for sugar and spice and all things nice, she is slugs and snails and everything yucki!

I asked the lettuce lady how she keeps hers unmunched - she lays copper piping around her beds, apparently slugs won't go over copper and she doesn't get a single one.  But she says it's a fair financial layout initially.  :-\

You can get nematodes to kill even the tiny little ones that you cant see too. That is a fair old layout as well.
We used the kind for vine weevils a while back and they worked  a treat.
