Clay & Ceramics November 2011

Jill... definitely! I love making things, but lose patience when it comes to decorating, I bet between us we could make some great things! My wheel was a bargain, a lovely old bloke in a school was giving it away, only problem was he was in Lincoln, so it cost me the diesel and a few days of sweet talking the OH for him to go and pick it up :D I'm sure I'll get some time to do something with it soon, only about 15 years til they leave home! ;)
Georgie, it's probably easier to start with earthenware, it fires at a lower temperature and you can get lots of ready made glazes in nice colours and they're a bit cheaper than stoneware. I started out with 'super white earthenware' but you can get any colour clay that you fancy, you will get different effects in the glaze depending on what colour you use. Find what you want and find out what temperature it needs for a glaze firing, then buy glazes that mature in that range.
I get a lot of my raw materials from clayman supplies, they have an online shop, but you have to ring to place an order, the only thing is the postage can sometimes be a bit steep due to the weight (around £15) but that's the same for anyone. There is also Bath Potters Supplies, CTM and a couple of others I've forgotten.
The rest is fairly simple, make a batch of beads, let them dry, fire to bisque temperature, let them cool, glaze and fire again to full temperature, once they're cold they're done :)
Here's some from my latest batch...

Sparkles:
Oh my, Caroline those goddesses are just beautiful! :)
jille:
We'll have to do that sometime Caroline :-) Your new beads are gorgeous
I have been looking around at glazes and Cromartie were cheapest for Duncan crystal gazes, 1/2 the price of some places.
Izzybeads:
Potters wheel...oh yes... :P I wanted one and was hunting one down, I didn't want an electric one - bit of a wuss - I wanted the old treadle one, but then I got into lampwork by default and the rest is history, but I will visit Caroline..pleasssssssssssssse, when you get it up and running ;)
I am loving the Goddess beads, I have just had a peek on FB, they are gorgeous.
Sorry to hear you have been poorly :(
Jo:
